Justified was composed in 1994 for Mark Ford - Mark Ford was the only Bb Cornet Major in the Bachelor of Education course at the Faculty of Education and Faculty of Music and was a close colleague and friend of the composer.

Justified was written after the faculty head requested that Mark Ford change his study instrument to trumpet, as cornets were not permitted in the course. Mark advocated strongly that the instrument had relevance, and in fact, was still being taught in many schools throughout Victoria. Hence, he felt Justified!!
